Richard Prince: Collected Writings gathers together for the first time a selection of short works of fiction by highly regarded visual artist Richard Prince. Produced between 1974 and 2009, the thirty-five prose pieces compiled here explore everything from Franz Kline to Woodstock, and include revealing musings on the revolutionary approach to photography that's been central to Prince's art-making practice.

Richard Prince was born in 1949, in the Panama Canal Zone. In the mid '70s Prince developed a radical art-making practice based on mining images from mass media, advertising and entertainment, that has redefined the concepts of authorship and ownership. Applying his understanding of the complex transactions of representation to the making of art, he has evolved a unique signature that is filled with the echoes of other signatures, but is uniquely his own. A perceptive chronicler of American subcultures and vernaculars, and their role in the construction of American identity, he has probed the racism, sexism, and psychosis in mainstream humor; the mythical status of cowboys, bikers, and celebrities; and the push-pull allure of pulp fiction and pornography. An avid collector of material pertaining to American life during the '50s, '60, and '70s, Prince – and his collection of literary rarities – were the subject of Richard Prince: An American Prayer, an exhibition at the Bibliotheque nationale de France, Paris, in 2011. Prince has published forty-seven books.
