From the Foreword:

"The following papers were first presented at The Form of the Book conference on 30 January 2009, at St Bride Library in London. The title is an homage to Jan Tschichold's collected essays on book design, written between 1941 and 1975 and published under the title The Form of the Book: Essays on the Morality of Good Design (Lund Humphries, 1991) [...]

The Form of the Book Book hopes to reignite interest in Tschichold's publication, while offering an alternative to the glossy picture compilation that passes as a reflection on graphic design these days. In contrast to Tschichold's book, however, this one involves a variety of voices -- from the young practitioner to the established design historian -- and tones -- from the conversation to the reminiscence. Yet what the texts collected here have in common is an interest in the book as a material space for critical self-reflection and exchange."

Featuring essays on the past, present, and future of book design by preeminent graphic designers, theorists, and historians Catherine de Smet; James Goggin; Jenny Eneqvist; Roland Fruh & Corina Neuenschwander; Richard Hollis; Sarah Gottlieb; Chrissie Charlton; and Armand Mevis.
